Straight Talk Wireless, a subsidiary of Verizon, has introduced a new unlimited data plan priced at $25 per month. The plan, called StraightSavings, is exclusively available through Walmart and targets new customers who bring their own compatible, unlocked phones. To activate the plan, customers will need to purchase a SIM kit with the plan at an initial cost of $29.88 plus tax.
The StraightSavings plan offers unlimited talk, text, and high-speed data, but with some limitations. Mobile hotspot functionality is not supported, and video streaming quality is capped at 480p, potentially impacting the viewing experience for those who rely heavily on video content. Additionally, data speeds may be slower during periods of network congestion due to data deprioritization.
To maintain the $25 monthly rate, customers must enroll in autopay and join Straight Talk’s loyalty rewards program. Customers can switch phones after activation as long as the new device has not been previously activated on Straight Talk.
The introduction of the StraightSavings plan is a strategic move by Straight Talk to compete with other carrier-owned prepaid brands like Metro by T-Mobile, which also offers a $25 unlimited plan. However, unlike Metro, Straight Talk’s plan is primarily available through brick-and-mortar national retail, offering greater visibility and convenience for general consumers.
Verizon now offers unlimited plans through several of its prepaid brands at the $25 price point. Straight Talk is its brick-and-mortar offering while Visible by Verizon provides a digital-only offering. Meanwhile, Total Wireless is promoting an offer of unlimited data for $30/month or less. However, it’s only available to customers with 4 or more lines at that price. Total Wireless also differs from Straight Talk and Visible in that it has its own branded stores. Nearly 1k Total Wireless stores have opened thus far.
