T-Mobile Fired The First Shots Igniting A Prepaid Price War

This is a very aggressive offer from Verizon. It all started last week when T-Mobile issued a press release stating that its prepaid brand, Mint Mobile, was throwing AT&T and Verizon customers a lifeline by offering them up to four free lines when they bring their numbers to Mint Mobile. Verizon fired back the next day by offering T-Mobile postpaid switchers a $15/month unlimited plan through its Visible by Verizon prepaid brand with a 5 year price lock. Verizon’s press release for the offer made it very clear they were fighting back by stating; “In response to Mint Mobile’s recent promotional campaign, Visible, a leading prepaid wireless provider on Verizon’s award-winning network and recently ranked #1 by J.D. Power for best purchase experience in its segment— is offering T-Mobile postpaid customers a 5-year rate guarantee at $15 per month, per line.”

This new Total Wireless offer provides Verizon with further firepower against T-Mobile and expands its aggression against its competitor by trying to steal away customers of its prepaid brands. The Total Wireless deals are currently the most competitive offers in prepaid. They offer budget pricing for unlimited plans, a family of 4 can go unlimited for just $60/month and also get 4 free phones. The assault is against T-Mobile’s online only prepaid customers as well as traditional subscribers who shop through branded stores. Total Wireless has over 1k stores opened, as noted in a recent report from Wave7 Research. They can now go head to head against Metro by T-Mobile branded stores with their own special offers.

What’s also notable in this newly launched carrier prepaid price war is the striking absence of AT&T. AT&T has yet to announce any new offers to attempt to take customers away from either T-Mobile or Verizon through its prepaid brands that include Cricket Wireless and AT&T Prepaid. However, AT&T often announces new deals for Cricket Wireless on Fridays. So will there be a response tomorrow or will AT&T remain asleep? We’ll find out in 24 hours.
